CASTLE NOWHERE

@ The Royal Ballet
Choreography Matjash Mrozewski
Music Arvo Pärt

There was tension at the Royal Opera House last saturday, for the world premiere of a new ballet by Matjash Mrozewski. Cause apparently he is quite famous in the ballet world.
I, until then, didnt know who the fuck he was. I went to the show to see Kenneth MacMillan's Requiem.
But it is this new choreography that took my breath away.
A big dark empty stage, objects hanging from the ceiling. A woman is waiting, anxious, in a beautiful evening gown. Someone comes in (her lover?), the guests (3 other couples) appear.
The music, very filmic (big cello moments...) shifts in moods. Just like the heroine, it is big and imposing, but can also become all quiet and mysterious. Just like the choreography in fact, big jumps and battements, but also tender arm movements.
It has also some tragic tones: there is an air of doom, end of an era, to this party. Something is happening, it is their last party? is it her last party? why is that man coming to her, only to reject her, or for her to break free after a while?
We will not know, there is no story to this ballet, I only made it up based on my impressions.
Uncertainty and impermanence are apparently recurrent themes with Mrozewski, and they came through during those 20 minutes.
I dont really know how to express how I felt after that. It seemed all perfect to me, but the again, what do I know?
The guy sitten next to me said: "I feel so privileged to have witnessed this".

Being a world premiere, I could not find photographs of this ballet on the web... sorry!
